“Service-learning at Duke really made me start thinking about justice issues and human rights issues that are not always front and center in our studies, and not in media coverage either.”

“Working largely in humanitarian fields and international conflicts, the reflection process that’s part of service-learning here at Duke really helped me to be able to frame and think about difficult questions in regards to that kind of work. It also helped me gain facilitation skills for being able to guide those discussions with my students now; to take the risk to probe the grey areas and connect the dots, my students have really been able to learn more and engage with populations instead of studying them as this abstract other.”
